Course Overview In this class, we will use novels, short stories, poems and a play to learn about the periods in American Literature. In addition, we will also focus on writing skills, specifically essays and a research paper. Vocabulary is incorporated from our literature selections. Formal grammar instruction is not included; however, grammar concepts are reviewed and covered through the writing process.
Course Credit 1 High school English credit
Materials Needed Students need to bring a folder, paper, writing utensil, computer (if have), required books for the section of reading we are on at each specified time, and whatever materials/supplies are needed for each specified time.
Class Expectations/Rules Students are expected to:
Be on time
Turn in all assignments when DUE
Participate in class
Remain in classroom during class time unless given permission by instructor toleave
Be respectful of instructor and classmates
Turn cellphone on do not disturb and not use cellphone unless given permission by instructor (cellphones need to be kept out of sight during class time)
Grading Semester grades will be emailed at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters. The overall grade for American Literature is divided among these categories:
Tests/Quizzes-30%
Writing Assignments-20%
Homework-20%
Class Participation-20%
*Participation is being a part of class discussion, however, it is not aboutmonopolizing the discussion or conversation. The class is designed to discuss readings/assignments among each other and with teacher.
Materials/Supplies-10%
*Due dates and Assignments could be subject to change. Quarterly exams are not cumulative, but may be at the instructor’s discretion.
Research Paper All students are required to submit a 3-5 page research paper using MLA format. We will have an ample amount of class time to work on research paper writing methods. The students will be given clear expectations for their papers as well.
Late Assignments Late homework and other assignments (including papers) will lose one letter grade for each day they are late. If you are going to be absent, you can email your homework.
Attendance Text or email me if you have to miss class. Students only meet one day a week. For this reason, it is very important that students do not miss class because due dates on assignments are given along with other information in class. Students are responsible for looking at the proposed schedule of assignments (see below) or asking other classmates about missed work and getting notes.
