Course Overview This course provides a one-year survey of U.S. history from the Colonial Period to the War on Terror, with an emphasis on the twentieth century. Using a combination of videos, engaging lecture, class discussion, group projects and individual research assignments, students learn about the various political, social, religious, and economic developments that have shaped and continue to shape the United States.
Course Credit 1 U.S. History credit 0.5 Government credit
Materials Needed Students need to bring a folder, paper, writing utensil, computer (if have), Exploring America Volumes 1 and 2 by Notgrass, and whatever materials/supplies are needed for each specified time.
Class Expectations/Rules Students are expected to:
Be on time
Turn in all assignments when DUE
Participate in class
Remain in classroom during class time unless given permission by instructor toleave
Be respectful of instructor and classmates
Turn cellphone on do not disturb and not use cellphone unless given permission by instructor (cellphones need to be kept out of sight during class time)
Grading Semester grades will be emailed at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters. The overall grade for U.S. History/Government is divided among these categories:
Tests/Quizzes-30%
Writing Assignments-20%
Homework-20%
Class Participation-20%
*Participation is being a part of class discussion, however, it is not aboutmonopolizing the discussion or conversation. The class is designed to discuss readings/assignments among each other and with teacher.
Materials/Supplies-10%
*Due dates and Assignments could be subject to change. Quarterly exams are not cumulative, but may be at the instructor’s discretion.
Late Assignments Late homework and other assignments (including papers) will lose one letter grade for each day they are late. If you are going to be absent, you can email your homework.
Attendance Text or email me if you have to miss class. Students only meet one day a week. For this reason, it is very important that students do not miss class because due dates on assignments are given along with other information in class. Students are responsible for looking at the proposed schedule of assignments (see below) or asking other classmates about missed work and getting notes.
